Over-Ear Headphones

 

For audiophiles and home users this type of design is generally considered to be the best. As they usually use larger drivers which tend to have better bass response and have better noise insulation due to their closed design, the overall result is typically better quality sound. Over ear designs are more comfortable as they don't supply pressure directly onto the ear (although some people prefer the feel of other designs). The down-side is their lack of portability, bulky size and greater weight. And because of their greater noise insulation they are not suitable for situations where a certain degree of outside noise is desirable for safety reasons e.g. walking across a busy street, bike-riding etc. However if ultimate sound quality is your biggest priority, over-ear is the way to go. On-Ear Headphones

On-ear designs can still produce great sound with deep bass and clear highs, but because they don't completely cover the ear they are less capable of sealing out outside noise, although active noise cancelling technology can help here. And because they sit on the ear rather than over it they may not be as comfortable to wear for long periods. They also tend to not stay on your head as well as other designs if you move about a lot.

However many people consider on-ear to be the best compromise. The top designs deliver great sound and still offer a reasonable degree of comfort.
