What is a subwoofer?

A "subwoofer" (also known as a sub) is a type of speaker in a vehicle's audio system dedicated to reproducing very low frequencies. Whereas a standard woofer covers the audio frequency range of about 20 to 2,000 hertz (Hz) and a mid-woofer up to about 5,000 Hz, a subwoofer is designed to only cover frequencies up to about 200 Hz. By using a dedicated driver to cover those super low frequencies each component in the system will do a better job of reproducing the frequencies assigned to it.
